Since the late nineteenth century, the Photothek at KHI has been collecting images primarily documenting Italian art from late antiquity to the modern era. The collection, which comprises over 630,000 photographs, reflects the history of photography as an archival medium as well as material objects. The possibility of accessing visual reproductions of cultural artefacts and buildings in one place and in a standardized format allows researchers to compare and study art ex situ.
